SGT. RICHARD CUMMINGS
Star # 101 42nd Precinct
End of Watch 1 May 1905

Sgt. Richard Cummings commanded a large group of officers assigned to an area experiencing serious labor problems. Verbal conflict flared between the strike breakers and strike sympathizers. A horse-drawn bus driver for Marshall Field's disobeyed police orders and attempted to force his vehicle into a heavily congested area. The sides of the wagon struck Sgt. Cummings, throwing him to the ground and under the horses and bus. The dedicated sergeant later died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
